Vincenzo Torella, 60, died today while at work. A dramatic accident cost him his life while he was working on a construction site, right in the center, a few meters from Via Vittorio Veneto. The prosecutor wants to clarify the tragedy around 7 in the morning on Monday, November 20 and has opened an investigation.
The Carabinieri are in charge of the investigations. Vincenzo Torella, as it has been learned, died crushed by an auger, a machine that would be used for geological work near the foundations of a building in via Ludovisi, at number 46. The case is advancing with the hypothesis of culpable homicide against unknown persons .
He died instantly
The 118 intervened at the scene immediately after the accident and tried to revive him in vain. Torella, in fact, died instantly. At the scene of the accident, which occurred precisely in via Cadore, at the intersection with via Ludovisi, the police from the via Vittorio Veneto station and the company from the Rome Research Center were also present. With them also the ASL inspectors.
As we learned, the drill was on board a parked truck, while the machinery was about to be lowered from the heavy vehicle, however, something went wrong.
The first hypothesis
The truck would have become unbalanced, perhaps due to a depression in the road surface, and the drill would have fallen on its side, overwhelming and crushing the worker. Investigations will now clarify the exact dynamics of the fatal accident that occurred at work.
The prosecutor’s investigations
As mentioned, proceedings will now be carried out for the crime of manslaughter to the detriment of unknown persons. The investigation, coordinated by the Prosecutor’s Office, must verify compliance with safety measures at the construction site and training at the workplace. Investigations also aim to determine who operated the machinery that crushed the worker.
the condolences
The Councilor for School, Training and Work of the capital, Rome, Claudia Pratelli, expressed her “deep condolences for the accident”: “Another victim at work, another unbearable loss. On this front, all institutions must commit themselves and commit without rest to promote training”. and controls so that a safe work culture exists at all levels.
“I express my closeness to the family of the construction worker who died in the center of Rome. – commented the regional councilor of the Pd of Lazio, Eleonora Mattia, member of the Pisana labor commission – He is the 69th victim at work in Lazio since January 2023. It is not acceptable that in a civilized country we continue to die from work. As institutions, at all levels, we must make our presence felt with concrete actions. We already addressed the issue of safety at work last month in the Chamber with a question from me. We must do more and quickly.”
The anger of the unions
“Less than a month after the last fatal accident, we find ourselves mourning a new construction victim in Rome. – Nicola Capobianco, general secretary of Filca-Cisl Rome, thunderously declares. – Vincenzo Torella leaves behind his wife and children, to whom our most heartfelt “The hug is leaving. “The trail of blood on the construction sites is long and unacceptable, it must be stopped by any means.”
“The dynamics of the accident – added Capobianco – are still not clear, the only certainty is that the worker was crushed by the drill. Since the beginning of the year, this is the fourth construction victim in Rome and its province, a truly impressive data.
In the last 20 years there have been 146 victims on construction sites. During the summit with the prefect on safety, scheduled for Wednesday the 29th, we will once again ask for drastic interventions to guarantee safety on the construction sites and the quality of the work.”
USB and Rete Iside, for their part, have been carrying out a campaign for some time to introduce the crime of murder and serious or very serious injuries at work, which has become a law of popular initiative together with other political and social forces. .
“We are convinced that, in this way, an instrument of deterrence would be created against that culture that sees a cost in health and safety protection measures, which must be reduced to a minimum to increase benefits. We also denounce how people can die at work, there are more and more elderly workers: the pension system in our country has been massacred government after government. Unfortunately, even in this budget law the Meloni government continues on this path: making money with pensions, a trend that must be stopped at all costs,” adds the acronym USB in a statement.
