WEATHER UNTIL MAY 27, 2023, ANALYSIS AND FORECAST
We are in the midst of a very unstable weather phase, due to the depression vortex that emerged from Tunisia and now moves, attenuated, along the Ionian. There was no shortage of very intense rains and storms, especially in some areas of the South. The good news is linked to the fact that the heavy rains are respecting the recently flooded areas.
There have been and are still in place very abundant rainfall, due to the stau effect, also in western Piedmont. Here the rain is a godsend, as it was perhaps the area most affected by the long drought. Now the bad weather is abating, due to the attenuation of the vortex that moves towards the east and is losing energy.
A large oil breach will continue to dominate the Mediterranean area and therefore for the moment we will not have the arrival of high pressure, which will remain too far north. Therefore, we should not expect an improvement in the short term. Storm activity will take center stage in the early days of the new week, but the weather is likely to remain capricious even later.
Precipitation will be more irregular, even in a very unstable weather scenario, since there will no longer be a well-organized cyclonic vortex. The storms will therefore have characteristics more linked to the daytime cycle, with phenomena enhanced by solar heating. The temperatures will rise several degrees, due to the insolation, returning to values more typical of the time.
IN DETAIL
Monday May 22: the new week will start with showers in Ionica Basilicata, Calabria and Sicily, but also with some rain in Piedmont. Brilliant spells will prevail elsewhere. During the day, daytime storms, especially in the Alps and inland areas of the Center-South, with invasions on the Tyrrhenian coast.
Tuesday May 23: initially sunny, then widespread afternoon thunderstorms over the inner Apennine mountainous areas expanding into the nearby plains. Showers are also expected in the alpine sectors.
Wednesday May 24: resurgence of instability in the North with electrical storms also in the plains.
More weather trends: daytime instability will persist for the rest of the week, leaving Italy vulnerable to the action of high-altitude fresh air infiltrations from the northern quadrants.
