The anticyclone’s attempt to protect Italy does not have a good outcome and the weather is preparing to get worse again. The already imminent ruling, which will affect part of the Peninsula, is caused by descent of a high-altitude cold air front from northern Europe.
This unstable momentum is linked to a true high altitude vortex which, flowing along the eastern flank of the high pressure present over Western Europe, it will lean towards the Alps. The same vortex will later parade on Thursday, with retrograde movement, towards the south of France and the north of Spain.
The effects of this deterioration will be felt mainly in the north of Italy and partly in the central regions. It will be another turbulent episode of a truly tormented May 2023 and that still does not find a definitive exit. This is the period of thunderstorms that can also be very strong.
The thermal contrasts will be favored by the presence of temperatures higher than those of the last few days. The more incisive daytime heating will provide the necessary energy for the storms that form in the afternoon, with phenomena that will sometimes be violent, accompanied by hail.
Storm gust coming from the Alps
In detail, Wednesday May 24 will already begin with the first thunderstorms in the eastern alpine foothills, a prelude to theescalation of instability from the hottest hours. Between the afternoon and the night the storms will be more intense, moving towards the plains between Veneto, Lombardy and then Piedmont.
Conditions may exist for some isolated large hailstorms. There will also be lively thunderstorms in west-central Emilia, as well as in various inland parts of central Italy, especially near the Apennine mountain range and inland north-central Sardinia.
The evolution for Thursday, when the cold drop will move from France to Spain, will continue to be marked by Thunderstorms over northwestern Italy, but improving at night. There will also be the usual thunderstorm activity along the Apennine ridge.
Temperatures, thanks to this deterioration, will drop a few degrees in northern Italy. A further increase in temperatures is expected between Friday and the weekend, when the instability will resize with more sunny areas also in the north of the plains. Storms will stalk in the mountains.
