PALERMO – Dr. Khalil Fattouch, a renowned cardiac surgeon from Palermo, was recently confirmed among the members of the prestigious board of the Mitral Conclave, an international congress dedicated to mitral valve surgery of the heart. The conference, sponsored by the American Association of Thoracic Surgeons (AATS), was held in New York on May 4-5, 2023.
A symposium with important topics
The teacher. Fattouch, director of the Department of Cardio-Thoraco-Vascular Surgery at the Maria Eleonora Hospital in Palermo, is the only Italian who has been a member of the Mitral Conclave commission since 2017. During the symposium, the Sicilian doctor moderated sessions on various topics, including the inclusion of minimally invasive techniques for mitral valve repair and the latest frontiers in the surgical and percutaneous treatment of the tricuspid valve.
Important commitments for the doctor of Palermo
In addition to his commitment at the Mitral Conclave, prof. Fattouch is a member of the AATS commission that evaluates international scholarship applications for physicians-in-training and director of the Mitral Academy, an Italian association dedicated to sharing excellence in cardiac repair surgery.
In Palermo, at the Maria Eleonora Hospital, prof. Fattouch leads a team that performs more than 450 surgeries a year for mitral valve repairs and replacements and for TAVI procedures, transcatheter aortic valve replacement. The cardiac surgeon is also an associate professor at the University of Palermo.
A very successful career
During his career, Dr. Fattotouch has published more than 120 scientific articles and is currently coordinating an international trial to determine the optimal strategy for cases of concurrent and non-concomitant tricuspid valve repair during mitral valve procedures (PROCIDA trial). In addition, he is responsible for the ENDO TAVI project for study and research in the field of percutaneous aortic valve treatment. The experience of Prof. Fattouch covers all aspects of adult cardiac surgery, with special attention to structural pathologies, valve dysfunction, complex aortic procedures, valve repair, and transcatheter procedures.
