Next week: Saint Martin’s summer confirmed! But be careful, this year will last very little: a winter cyclone will hit Italy with direct consequences for most of our regions.
But let’s go in order. The popular saying goes: “The summer of San Martino lasts three days and a bit“ , paraphrasing a period of about three days that falls in the first half of November. The most widespread legend says that, on November 11, Saint Martin met a poor man, naked and cold, while riding a horse near the city of Amiens, in France. The cold was intense and the Saint did not hesitate to cut his cloak in two to offer shelter to the traveler. The gesture would have been so appreciated that, just as he handed half of his cloak to the poor man, a warm sun emerged.
Meteorologically speaking, the San Martino Summer represents a particularly soft and pleasant period which arrives after a stormy autumn phase.
Good, between Monday, November 13 and Wednesday, November 15 in fact we will live one more stable phase, thanks to an anticyclonic recovery that will guarantee more sunshine and thermal values once again higher than the average for the period, even between 8 and 10°C. In particular the unusually warm It will be felt in Liguria, in part of the northern plains (here, however, pay attention to the early morning fogs), in the central regions and on the two main islands, where maximum temperatures will reach peaks above 20-22. °C.
But be careful, this period will last very short this year. From Thursday, November 16 in fact, a decision is expected return point on the weather front when very cold air masses of arctic they could slide first towards central-eastern Europe and then also towards Italy.
If this were to happen, it is reasonable to expect a vertical collapse in temperatures with thermal values that would remain well below the climatic averages, especially in the Northern and Central regions: it would be the first real cold with winter characteristics.
Not only cold with a winter flavor: during Friday, November 17, the cold currents could favor the formation of an authentic cyclone in our seas capable of unleashing locally very intense rains due to the collision of different air masses that could be created in our country (pre-existing heat due to the summer of Saint Martin and frosts in northern Europe).
We will have the opportunity to talk about it again in our next updates.
