Rai remembers Don Lorenzo Milani

On the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Don Lorenzo Milani, Rai dedicates a series of initiatives on television, radio, digital media and social networks to the famous Italian priest and educator, to disseminate his legacy and stimulate reflection on his work. Documentaries, films and specials tracing his life and thought will be broadcast, offering the public a unique opportunity to learn more about his contribution to Italian society. After some programs already broadcast in the previous days, Saturday May 27 will be the day of celebration and “Uno Mattino in Famiglia”, broadcast at 8:30 am on Rai 1, will dedicate a space to his figure and his innovative pedagogical ideas, while the Tgr’s personal editorial will prepare reports on the centenary celebrations. In particular, the Tuscany editorial staff will follow the ceremony in Barbiana, in the presence of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella and the President of the CEI, Cardinal Matteo Maria Zuppi. The Puglia newsroom will dedicate a service to the scientific secondary school of Acquaviva delle Fonti, which bears the name of Don Milani, while the Friuli-Venezia Giulia newsroom will focus on a local reality that is inspired by his teachings. In Emilia-Romagna, the newsroom will follow the initiatives organized by the Giovanni XXIII Foundation in Bologna, where some of the writings of this figure of great importance in the Italian cultural scene are preserved, an example of civic commitment and the fight for social justice. The Abruzzo newsroom will also broadcast reports on his contribution to the history of education and schools in Italy. Also on Saturday, May 27, at 7:05 p.m., Rai Premium will broadcast the film “Don Milani – The Prior of Barbiana” (1997), directed by Andrea and Antonio Frazzi and starring Sergio Castellitto, Ilaria Occhini and Roberto Citran. The film covers the events that marked the life of Don Milani and his commitment to the parish of Barbiana.
Rai 5, for its part, will present “L’atlante che non c’è” on Monday, May 29 at 11 pm, a Rai Cultura special for “Charade, el círculo de las palabras”, premiered by Rai. The program led by Marco Vivio will explore Don Milani’s stay in Barbiana and his role in promoting a school open to all and oriented towards social justice.
