Discovering the lower course of the Aniene with the urban hiking route between the Tor Cervara bridge and the Sant’Eusebio tower: this is the proposal of VARA, Valle Aniene Associations Network, which on Sunday May 28 organizes a free visit to starting at 9:30 a.m. and scheduled return at 4:00 p.m. The excursion, managed by guides and volunteers from the Valle Aniene Network and Federtrek, includes several stages between nature and history for a total of 4 kilometers, with stops at medieval monuments scattered throughout the banks of the second river of the capital and in some of the most evocative strips of the Roman countryside that still remain intact and undeveloped.
“We will travel roads with little traffic such as via Gerano, via del casale Cavallari, via Bona and cross a daring lattice-structure bridge built around the 60s over the Gra, to then continue along a dirt road adorned with centuries-old poplars. and willows –explains Luigi Tuilia, president of VARA-. Then we will immerse ourselves in a green corridor safe from industrial complexes until we reach the medieval tower of Sant’Eusebio, a site that since 2021 is part of the Italian Historic Houses. Here, at the end of the walk, a small tasting of Vicovaro bread and jams from the Aniene valley will be offered, for a snack in full peasant style”.
The route is one of the stages of the ‘Cammino dell’Aniene’, a series of itineraries along the Roman river devised by the VARA and included in the activities of the so-called Fluvial Contracts, of which this association is one of the founders members of the Aniene.
“The activities of our network include formulas for environmental education and historical information, as well as ecological and recovery activities through the assistance and organization of events aimed at valuing and improving the spaces and banks of the river – adds the president Luigi Tuilia -. For this we use collaboration and synergy with other associations and organizations of volunteers, experts and researchers who supervise and study the territories crossed by the Aniene”.
