THE GENERAL CLASSIFICATION OF THE GIRO D’ITALIA 2023
13.06 The shooting starts again: Stefano Oldani’s flame has been rekindled in the group.
13.04 There are no Movistars: Jumbo-Visma, Ineos Grenadiers and UAE Emirates to close.
13.03 A rider from Arkea-Samsic and one from Cofidis try to leave the group, but perhaps the break should have gone.
13.01 Another four riders join the first pack, maybe this is the right break? Let’s see if the squad responds.
12:58 Meanwhile, Magnus Cort also manages to get back to the fugitives.
12.55 Destroying speeds in this first part: runners in trouble at the end of the group.
12.53 Four drivers in command now: Alex Baudin and Larry Warbasse (Ag2r Citroen), Derek Gee (Israel Premier Tech) and Veljko Stojnic (Corratec Selle Italia).
12.51 Also watch out for bad weather today. Lots of sun yesterday, some storms could come instead.
12.49 Shots and counterattacks, there is no peace. Some Jumbo-Visma riders are also active: to understand the racing schedule of Roglic’s team today.
12.47 Movistar is also very active, trying to close the gap.
12.45 Monstrous Derek Gee: Another attack for him that returns to the front. With him also Baudin.
12.42 Groupama-FDJ marks EF, Alberto Bettiol also tried it, stopped.
12.40 Ben Healy comes out and Thibaut Pinot marks him for the fight for the Maglia Azzurra.
12.38 favorable road and 50 km/h on average in this first phase of the race.
12.36 150 kilometers to the finish line.
12.33 Always ahead of Warbasse and Stojnic, 20″ margin.
12.31 The group shots obviously continue, but the escape should start later, when the road starts to climb.
12.28 Alessandro De Marchi tries to shoot. The group follows him and is forced to give up.
12.26 Two Jumbo-Visma riders are always in the top positions. The Primoz Roglic team is very active.
12.24 Puncture for Lukas Poestlberger, forced to change the tire. After the first 20 km of the race, the attacks continue from behind the two fugitives.
12.22 The British champion also resumed. 28” the advantage of Larry Warbasse (AG2R) and Veljko Stojnic (Corratec).
12.21 Mark Cavendish on the attack! At such a stage, taking advantage early can be important to avoid problems with time limits.
12.20 The first 20 minutes of the day have been traveled at an average of almost 50 km/h. Nothing new in this Giro d’Italia.
12.19 Now a six-man group with Toms Skujins and Stefano Oldani try to withdraw, but the group closes immediately. Decreases the margin of the two footprints.
12.18 There are many runners who want to start the race and therefore have not given up yet. The attempts followed, now also brought by Gabburo, Rota and Frigo. Stojnic and Warbasse remain in front.
12.16 Rex retakes thanks to an action by Sam Oomen. The Jumbo seems intent on keeping the race close or launching a man into the race.
12.14 Stojnic and Warbasse’s advantage increases again, with Rex still alone in the middle. Moment of calm in the group broken by an extension of an Eolo and an Astana.
12.11 It is precisely Rex, who was also the protagonist of an attack from afar in a previous stage. He alone is trying to repair the margin on the two prints.
12.10 The advantage of Warbasse and Stojnic amounts to 25″. He tries to unhook an Intermarché rider, probably Laurenz Rex.
12.09 Eolo Kometa and Green Project Bardiani absolutely want to put a man on the run and now they’re in charge of the chase.
12.07 They are Larry Warbasse (AG2R) and Veljko Stojnic (Corratec), both already seen in the race in this Giro. His small but interesting advantage remains.
12.05 Now two move, a Corratec pilot and an AG2R. They advanced a hundred meters but the pursuit of the group continues.
12.04 A group of ten riders is released, but from behind they do not seem willing to let them go. The Team Corratec riders are very active. In the meantime, I trade bikes for Sam Oomen.
12.02 The attacks begin. Two attempts by the Astana riders, blocked at the root.
11.59 HERE WE ARE! STEFANO ALLOCCHIO STARTS THE QUEEN STAGE! GOOD DOLOMITES, GOOD TOUR AND HAVE FUN EVERYONE!
11.57 Mechanical problem for Frenchman Alan Riou. Therefore, it will be necessary to wait for his return to the group before giving the official start.
11.54 There are those who chat and smile in a group, but there are many faces that are already somewhat tense. “Queen stage” faces for riders who still have something at stake.
11.52 Very important note: at the moment the weather is more than kind to the runners. The sun shines on the race, the hope is that it will last until the end even if the forecasts for Giau and Tre Cime are not encouraging.
11.50 Two yellow-blacks are in the first row, behind the race management car, they should be Bouwman and Hessmann. The Jumbo is not new to very risky tactics on important days, it may want to send two elements on “reconnaissance”.
11.48 There will be, as always, a great battle to escape, many will want to try an attack from afar in the most important stage of the Giro. We will see what the attitude of the big teams will be, with Primoz Roglic’s Jumbo-Visma being the one that could be the team most interested in keeping the race close.
11.45 With two GPM in the 1st category, two in the 2nd category, and the Tres Picos that count as Cima Coppi (after the cancellation of the Gran San Bernardo), today’s is inevitably the decisive fraction also for the allocation of the Blue Jersey. This is the starting situation:
1 PINOT Thibaut Groupama – FDJ 227
2 HEALY Ben EF Education-EasyPost 164
3 BAIS Davide EOLO-Kometa 144
4 RUBIO Einer Augusto Movistar Team 118
5 EGE Derek Israel – Premier Tech 66
11:43 am Departure today from Longarone, the municipality most affected by the Vajont catastrophe, which this year celebrates its 60th anniversary.
11.41 The riders take their first rides! Let’s go to km 0!
11.40 We resume the route of today’s stage: we begin with 80 km of slight but constant ascent towards Passo Campolongo, the first effort of the day. Brief descent towards La Villa and then climb towards the 2195 meters of Passo Valparola (13.9 km at 5.7%). Descent and then the climb that will light up the race: the terrible Passo Giau with its 9.8km at 9.3% to the 2227m summit. Descent towards Cortina d’Ampezzo and the grand finale: Passo Tre Croci with its 8 km at 7.2% before the brutal climb to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, with 7.1 km at 7.8% with the last 4 km consistently above 10%.
11.37 Riders are completing submission procedures. They begin to pile up for the start, everything is almost ready!
11.35 Meanwhile, we inform that Hugh Carthy, captain of the EF and 14th in the standings until yesterday, will not start again due to stomach problems.
11.33 These are the words of Matteo Tosatto, INEOS DS, at the beginning: “Important today to stay calm in the first phase. We have five very strong riders and we can manage the course in the best possible way. The race will go on at the Giau, there some teams could be wrong”.
11.30 So let’s remember the top10 of the general classification at the beginning of this decisive fraction:
1 1 – THOMAS Geraint INEOS Grenadiers 20 6″ 76:25:51
2 3 ▲1 ROGLIČ Primož Jumbo-Visma 6″ 0:29
3 2 ▼1 ALMEIDA João UAE Team Emirates 10″ 0:39
4 5 ▲1 DUNBAR Team Eddie Jayco AlUla 3:39
5 4 ▼1 CARUSO Damiano Bahrain – Winning 3:51
6 6 – KÄMNA Lennard BORA – hansgrohe 4:27
7 13 ▲6 PINOT Thibaut Groupama – FDJ 15″ 4:43
8 8 – LEKNESSUND Team Andreas DSM 9″ 4:47
9 9 – ARENSMAN Thymen INEOS Grenadiers 4:53
10 10 – DE PLUS Laurens INEOS Grenadiers 5:52
11.28 Only the two Sicilians Damiano Caruso and Salvatore Puccio were in the group both in that stage of 2013 and today. Then came an eighth place for Caruso, the hope is that today he can find the leg to leave an indelible mark in a Giro that has run somewhat in the dark so far.
11.26 The Three Peaks return to the Giro 10 years after the legendary feat achieved by Vincenzo Nibali in 2013. In a Giro dominated by the Sicilian, that success in the middle of a snowstorm was the brightest pearl. The weather on that occasion forced the organization to cut the other climbs. Today’s route, on the other hand, is reminiscent of that of 2007, when Leonardo Piepoli and Riccardo Riccò created one of the most spectacular actions of the new millennium.
11.23 Geraint Thomas starts again in the pink jersey and has shown great solidity and awareness so far. The closest to him is Primoz Roglic, capable of recovering after the difficulties of Monte Bondone and therefore remaining 29” behind. He is also fighting for final success Joao Almeida who, despite running the risk of collapsing yesterday on the ascent to Coi, is only 39” behind the Welshman. They are the ones who will fight for the victory of Giro 106 and, who knows, maybe they will also be the ones who will fight for the stage victory today.
11.20 A legendary setting for a setting that promises to be spectacular. 5,400 meters of elevation gain, 5 very tough climbs, three of which will take runners above 2,000 meters. Nothing is missing, impossible to ask for more.
11.17 The day we’ve all been waiting for has finally arrived! Today many of the knots will return home to land on the Dolomite stage that will end at the Tre Cime di Lavaredo.
11.15 Friends of OA Sport good morning and welcome to the LIVE LIVE of the nineteenth stage of the Giro d’Italia 2023!
Good morning friends of OA Sport and welcome to the LIVE LIVE of the nineteenth stage of the Giro d’Italia 2023! The most anticipated day has finally arrived, the one that all the fans have been waiting for since the official announcement of the route: today the Giro faces the “stage queenThat will be decided in the Three Peaks of Lavaredo!
It starts from Longarone, the municipality that 60 years ago suffered perhaps the most serious consequences of the Vajont disaster, to then face 183 km in the Dolomites. 5 GPM total, 5400 meters of altitude, 3 passages above 2000 meters above sea level and arrival at Tre Cimewhich also became Cima Coppi in this edition after the cut of the Great Saint Bernard.
In short, it is difficult to find a more prestigious, spectacular and demanding stage for what may be the decisive stage of the Giro. Geraint Thomas comes out to defend his Maglia Rosa from the attacks of Primoz Roglic and Joao Almeida, more fluctuating in performance than him, but still close in the rankings.
The last time the Giro traveled these legendary roads, Vincenzo Nibali pulled off an unforgettable feat in the Maglia Rosa in a blizzard. However, today’s stage is much harder than that of 2013 (modified precisely by the weather), while it is very similar to that of 2007. Passo Campolongo and Passo Valparola which will be the aperitif before the Brutal finish with Passo Giau (9.8 km at 9.3%), Passo Tre Croci (8 km at 7.2%) before the final in Tre Cime, 7 km at 7.8% with sections of more than 10 % in the last 4 km.
The start of Longarone will take place at 11:50. From OA Sport we tell you every minute of the nineteenth stage of the Giro d’Italia 2023 with our LIVE LIVE. Real-time updates starting at 11:15 a.m. so you don’t miss a single emotion from this stage that has everything to be one we will remember. Do not miss!
