A white van. And behind a scooter. Which are filmed by a company camera. A hypothesis, a small ray of light in an investigation full of difficulties and errors. Investigators are convinced that with that quad they took Astor Kata, the 5-year-old Peruvian girl who disappeared from Florence on June 10, from the old hotel. Researchers are not really certainties. But, among the most probable hypotheses, there is certainly the one that the girl was abducted in a period of time ranging from 3:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. (that is, when a video camera inside the illegally occupied property recorded her for the last time ) and 3:45 p.m. It is then that the mother returns from work and realizes that her daughter is not there. Swallowed into nothing In that half hour, the camera of a company next to Astor’s patio registers a noise. A thud, of an object falling from top to bottom. Is it a man climbing over the wall (at that point) barely two meters high? Impossible to exclude. Sure enough, moments later, a white van and a scooter pull away. The company was searched, but nothing was found, not even the slightest trace. It is, needless to say, a long investigation. Although time is, today, the worst adversary of researchers.

An investigation in which mistakes were made (the first two days, due to the concurrence of sporting events such as Calcio Storico and the Mugello Motomondiale, the number of uniformed officers used in the investigation was not adequate), but many also declared themselves omissions. Those who live illegally do not like to talk to the police. And, even less, does it tell its own story. In the prosecutor’s office they are convinced that not everything has come to light and that Kata’s own family is still hiding something. A secret. “Tell everything, don’t hide anything from the authorities,” said Piera Maggio, the mother of Denise Pipitone, the Sicilian girl who disappeared in 2004, in an interview with the newspaper Il Tirreno. “I’m sorry for what happened to this mother and father, I really I am. And I am humanly close to Kata’s parents. I know that these parents, this mother, are experiencing such great pain that my words are of no use.”
