On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Beatification of Father Pino Puglisi and 30 years of his martyrdom, the Provincial Secretariat of the Italian Police Union of Palermo, together with the Cultural Association of the Municipal Police of Palermo, organized a special event to remember the exemplary parish priest. The initiative, entitled “I Dreamed”, will take place on May 25 at the Pietro Lungaro Barracks – Domenico Corona Room in Palermo.
Father Pino Puglisi dedicated his life to the recovery of young people involved in organized crime in the Brancaccio district, fighting for their ideas and trying to offer them a better future. This event aims to keep the memory of this brave priest alive and spread his message of hope and social commitment.
The schools involved
The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the welcome of guests and students of the different participating schools.
Between these: the Padre Pino Puglisi Comprehensive State Institute, the Ninni Cassara State Linguistic Institute, the Vincenzo Ragusa and Otama Kiyoara – Filippo Parlatore State Institute, the Vittorio Emanuele III Comprehensive State Institute, the Maria Adelaide Boarding School and the Di Primer Grado Publius Virgil Marone, adds a important educational element for the event. Engaging students in a thematic discussion gives them an opportunity to reflect on the challenges they face in society and the role they can play in carrying on the legacy of Father Puglisi.
The program
At 9.30 the docufilm titled “L’ULTIMO SORRISO” will be screened, written and directed by Rosalinda Ferrante and Sergio Quartana. This film offers an intimate look at the life and legacy of Father Puglisi, delving into his efforts to fight crime and his dedication to the community. The feature film allows the viewer to immerse themselves in the life of Father Pino Puglisi, learn about his battles and appreciate his commitment to the fight against crime. This documentary film is a tribute to his work and a way to keep his memory alive so that he can continue to inspire future generations.
A Thematic Talk will take place at 10.30, a debate on the theme of the film, in which the participating students will also participate. The interactive dialogue will be attended by Dr. Leopoldo Laricchia, Quaestor of Palermo, Bishop Filippo Sarullo, Parish Priest of Palermo Cathedral, Giovanni Assenzio, Director of USIP Palermo, Paride Benassai, protagonist of the docufilm “L’LAST SMILE”, Giuseppe Raimondi, Regional Secretary of UIL Sicily, and Paola Geraci, representative of the Presence of the Gospel Movement. The event will be moderated by Francesco Panasci, journalist and artistic director of the initiative.
The debate offers a platform for discussion. where the people involved can share their experiences, ideas and points of view on the fight against organized crime and on the importance of an active social commitment. The participation of institutional figures, such as the Quaestor of Palermo and the parish priest of the Palermo Cathedral, adds authority to the debate and allows a constructive confrontation on how to face the challenges still present in society.
At 12:00 pm there will be a poetic performance by Martina Calandra, entitled “Soñé”, It adds an artistic element to the event. Through the words and emotions expressed in the poem, the audience is invited to reflect on the power of dreams to shape the future and overcome obstacles along the way.
Closing, at 12:30 p.m., the “Fiamme Oro Taekwondo” will close the event with a spectacular performance. This moment of energy and athletic mastery is meant to represent the strength and determination necessary to overcome challenges and achieve goals, as Father Puglisi did throughout his life.
