For some it may seem like a great idea, for others it is simply the perfect combination between the drink most loved by Italians, the coffee, and the right amount of alcohol: you want to see how you want, the result is always the same, a drink that exactly tells the tradition and the heart of our peninsula. But, what are the history and the recipe of this international success?
Borghetti espresso coffee liqueur was born in 1860 from the idea of Ugo Borghetti, businessman and owner of the Bar Caffè Sport in Ancona station square, to produce a drink that could give energy and freshness to the many workers employed in the construction . of the new Pescara – Ancona railway line. His simple but ingenious mixture of alcohol, sugar and coffee immediately became popular, probably also helped by the already widespread custom of consuming correct coffee, and when in 1863, the year the new route was inaugurated, he decided to let the Borghetti The initial success was confirmed and even increased.
Ugo Borghetti, who as a good businessman immediately sensed the great potential of his coffee liqueur, decided to start industrial production: he moved to Rome and during the fascist period he also obtained various positions in the party that helped his Borghetti spread and will be identified like the liquor of Italian families.
Soon known as the “royal espresso liqueur” In a scene full of lower-middle-range products in which it stands out for its quality, Borghetti has kept its recipe intact over the years, introducing only a few improvements where possible. The production process that distinguishes it, in fact, does not include artificial flavorings, nor infusions with coffee beans and where all other producers add coffee to the alcohol, Borghetti does the opposite by first producing the espresso and then adding alcohol.
The coffee is prepared in a huge mocha pot that guarantees the product its characteristic flavor, and the beans used are always roasted with a certain degree of humidity and for a time that has been perfected through almost 160 years of experience.
The coffee qualities used are Arabica, which provides smoothness and complex taste notes, and Robusta, capable of enriching the product and giving it intensity.
Even the acquisition by Fratelli Branca Distilleries has not meant any change in the Borghetti coffee liqueur production process, on the contrary, everything has remained exactly as it was originally following the company motto to the letter “Novare Serbando”, but the incorporation of this Italian excellence to its already well-known family of brands meant a successful international relaunch of the coffee liqueur, so that everyone could taste and appreciate this authenticity, a symbol of the tradition of our peninsula.
Today Borghetti is on the market in two formats: the elegant 70cl bottle, which is never lacking in the Italian home, and in the practical 3.35cl pet pack, convenient to drink anywhere. However and wherever you decide to drink it, one thing is certain: the unmistakable taste of this Italian excellence lends itself perfectly to sharing to seal passionate and exciting moments both with the people we love and with perfect strangers with whom we share a passion.
Born to heat, even today Borghetti manages to inflame hearts and souls to give that simple, yet complex, “Desiderio Espresso” written in our DNA.
