The president of the regional council of Veneto, Roberto Ciambetti, came to propose the hypothesis of the requisition of parking lots in shopping centers to protect cars from hail. The idea arises after days of continuous emergency, in which strong storms are recorded every day with tornadoes and hailstorms, from Padua to Venice, from Treviso to Belluno, from Verona to Vicenza. “Veneto has been hit hard, for the umpteenth time in a few days. Tonight, on several occasions, a series of storms has unleashed our region. These are certainly not ordinary manifestations of bad weather,” the governor said. luca zaia.
Even the one from this last night seems like a war report, as on the occasion of the 110 wounded last week. In the Verona area there were several injuries: a patient in red code (a 16-year-old boy run over by a branch in Zimella), 7 in yellow code, 27 in green code rescued by Suem, to which must be added some autonomous accesses to emergencies.
The hail destroyed roofs, cars, industrial plants and artisans. In the countryside it has eliminated crops, vineyards, orchards and greenhouses. The railway lines are now interrupted along the section between Brescia and Padua: the number of people to be transported is very high, according to the railways it will not be possible to compensate with bus services for all passengers.
“Veneto was ‘bombed’ last night and in the early hours of the morning. It should not be said that these are summer phenomena, to take into account: I have numerous testimonies of pieces of ice the size of apples, weighing more than 150 g, with extreme destructive power. We are facing, due to violence and frequency of bad weather, something out of the ordinary. It has once again been a night of passion for our land”, concludes Zaia, who has declared a state of emergency and, before August 3, must present a first assessment of the damage in Rome.
“Damage surveys have been underway since the first light of dawn: we need to understand exactly the perimeters of the affected areas, which I hope will be extensive. The findings will be added to the reports already sent to the Government in recent days. The Regional Alarm Status will be updated in the next few hours before the new disturbances. Inexpensive snacks are needed for the affected areas of Veneto: this is what we will ask of the state.”
He discusses the proposal of the president of the Ciambetti regional council:
“Considering the impressive frequency of thunderstorms with hail that hit our region, I urge managers of major malls or supermarkets that have covered parking lots to keep them open even in the late afternoon and evening to provide adequate shelter for motorists without garages. Hundreds of motorists have sustained serious damage to their cars and body shops are struggling to keep up with repairs. There are those who have taken out insurance against hail or meteorological phenomena, but I believe that prevention is necessary. And I think a lot of motorists would also be willing to pay a fair contribution, but I hope this won’t be an obstacle.”
