It was perhaps a botulinum poisoning having killed one 48 year old woman to Ariano Irpino, in the province of Avellino. Her 52-year-old husband is in serious condition, but her life is not in danger.
Alleged case of botulinum: a woman dies
The victim’s name was Gerardina Corsano. It is suspected that she and her husband, an agricultural businessman from Flumeri, may have been poisoned after going to eat a pizza.
As reported by TGR Rai of Campania the toxin that caused food poisoning may have been contained in thespicy oil poured over the pizzas.
On the night of Saturday, October 28, the two had dinner at a local restaurant.
The next morning they felt unwell and reported spasms and other serious symptoms.
Immediate hospitalization. Unfortunately, nothing could be done for the woman: despite her attempts to resuscitate her, Gerardina Corsano passed away on the morning of Tuesday, October 31.
The husband will be transferred in the next few hours to a specialized center.
The local police station, led by Deputy Commissioner Licia Salerno, is investigating the episode. The investigations are coordinated by the Benevento prosecutor’s office.

As explained by the ISS (Istituto Superiore di Sanità ), botulism is a neuroparalytic disease caused by the toxins of clostridia that produce botulinum toxin.

Symptoms of foodborne botulism
Generally, symptoms of foodborne botulism in Italy appear within 24 to 72 hours.
HE botulinum symptoms the most common are:
- blurred and double vision,
- pupil dilation,
- difficulty keeping eyelids open,
- difficulty articulating speech,
- difficulty to swallow,
- dry mouth and mouth,
- constipation,
- urinary retention.
In more serious forms also manifestsrespiratory insufficiency.
